Who Is Jesus?

The Scriptures with great clarity and specificity answer the question. They answer it in such a way as to leave no doubt about His identity. And they leave no room for rival claims. Jesus’s own words as well as the apostolic testimony speak to the absolute exclusivity of the claims of and for Christ. There is no other way to God. There is no other way to eternal life. The apostle John, in the gospel that bears his name, states that Jesus is the Word and the Word was with God in the beginning. That all things were made through Him, and that without Him was not any thing made that was made. He is the Creator. In Jesus was life (the only true life and source of life for all men) and His life was the light of men. This Word became flesh and dwelt among us and the disciples saw His glory, the glory as of the only Son from the Father, and that He was full of grace and truth. John went on to declare that no man has ever seen God; yet “the only God [Jesus] who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” (John 1:1-18) (Note the unity of the Trinity)

In the first chapter of Hebrews the author states the following about Jesus of Nazareth:

  • He was appointed by God as heir of all things
  • He is the creator of the earth and heavens
  • He is the radiance of the glory of God
  • He is the exact imprint of God’s nature
  • He is the upholder of the universe
  • He is the only sin-bearer for man
  • He is the King at the Father’s right hand forever
  • He is the object of angel worship
  • He is the Son of God

In Paul’s letter to the Colossians we find these remarkable statements about Jesus:

  • He is the King, the real King of the real kingdom
  • He is the image of the invisible God
  • He is the creator of all things
  • He is the sustainer of all things in heaven and on earth
  • He is the head of the body, the church
  • He is the beginning and firstborn from the dead
  • He embodies all the fullness of Deity
  • He is the reconciler of God and man
  • He is the peacemaker through substitution

For those to whom the Father has revealed Him, He is all these things and so much more (as if this were not enough). He is the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star, our High Priest, Prophet and Redeemer King. He is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. He is the Lamb that was slain from before the foundation of the world. He is Faithful and True. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. He is Immanuel, God with us. He is the Word of God, the Anointed One, the Christ, the Son of Man, the Son of God. Meditate on these things.

Revelation SongAll glory to the NAME!

He is all beauty and loveliness; there is none to compare to Him on earth or in heaven. He is the first and supreme love of the true Christian, the One to whom we owe all honor, glory, praise and allegiance. He is our King, the real King of the eternal kingdom. We have entrusted our very lives and eternity to Him. We have been born again to a living hope by and through His Holy Spirit; given new life now, and eternal life in the ages to come. We are nothing without Him and everything with Him. We would sooner die than deny Him. We live and take every breath for Him. It is our badge of honor and joy to exalt Him in our hearts and through our lives; to proclaim His excellencies to lost and dying men. While we are still flawed and daily struggle with sin, our great desire in this life is to become more like Him. Our progress in this sanctification seems painfully slow, and is slow by intent – we would fall to pride if we were fully sanctified in this world. Our complete dependence upon Him would waver as we would begin to trust in ourselves. Such is the complete fickleness of the human heart – even of regenerate men. Yet we trust that His Word is true and that “He who began a good work in you [us] will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

Do you know who He is? And has that knowledge reordered your entire life from top to bottom? If not, seek Him. Ask God to open your blind eyes that you may “see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
